The chiefs
of Nagire ruled over parts of North Canara Dist. with Gersoppe as capital. They
ruled as feudatories of Vijayanagara Empire. After the death of Devaraya II Saluvamalla declared himself
as an independent ruler in Bhatkala region during 1472 AD. He ruled parts of
North Canara dist. consisting Honnavara, Barkur, Sirsi, Nagire etc. When Krishnadevaraya
became the emperor of Vijayanagara, again this region served as feudatories of
Vijayanagara.
Silver
and Copper coins with the inscriptions
of ‘Saluvamalla’ in kannada, ‘Rajadhiraja’ & ‘Devaraya’ in nagari script
were issued by them.
